Gillingham Football Club is taking a strong stance against derogatory language following reports of offensive remarks directed at a match official during their first game of the 2025/26 League Two season. The incident occurred during Gillingham's away match against Accrington Stanley, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Club managing director Joe Comper expressed disappointment over the behavior exhibited by some fans, highlighting the club's commitment to maintaining a respectful environment at matches. Gillingham has stated that any fans found guilty of such conduct will face bans from Priestfield Stadium and away games. Furthermore, the club warned that continued issues could lead to fines or more severe penalties. Comper reiterated the club's zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discriminatory language or behavior. This follows a previous incident in October 2023, where a Gillingham supporter received a lifetime ban for making a racist gesture during a game. The club has faced scrutiny, having been charged with three counts of misconduct by the Football Association in May 2023. Gillingham will host their first home game of the season against Walsall on 9 August.
