Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth says an experienced goalkeeper is in the pipeline.
What happened?
The team released both senior stoppers Glenn Morris and Jake Turner at the end of last season. Morris has joined Dorking Wanderers, while Turner is currently on the PFA’s training camp for free-agents.
Why it matters for Gillingham
Ainsworth wants a different set-up this time around, with a designated first-choice goalie and at least one young back-up. Taite Holtam, 21, is the only pro keeper on the books at present, but he’s highly inexperienced, with just two league appearances to his name.
What comes next?
Commenting on his chase for a keeper, Ainsworth said: “Fans can rest assured there's definitely one in the pipeline.” He added: “We'll definitely supplement him with a couple of prospects and good potentials.” Gillingham’s players reported back for pre-season on Thursday, with Ainsworth taking a watching brief, as the team looks to improve on their 17th place finish in England League Two, with 53 points from 46 games, and a recent form of WLLLD. The team is 34 points behind leaders Bromley, but Ainsworth is confident of a strong season, following a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury on 2026-05-02, and a 2-game winning run.
