Nick Freeman, a versatile midfielder who has won promotion twice with manager Gareth Ainsworth, is excited about his new role with Gillingham. The 30-year-old believes that the same positive culture and collective approach that led to successful campaigns in the past can be replicated at Priestfield Stadium this season.
Freeman, who recently completed a trial period before signing for the club, highlighted the importance of having a good environment and a strong team spirit. He said: 'First of all, you need a really good environment and a good culture. Good lads all buying into what the coaching staff want, which we already have. It's just about consistency.'
Ainsworth, known for his ability to build cohesive teams, has already impressed Freeman with his approach at Gillingham. The manager turned up the intensity during pre-season, and Freeman noted: 'It’s definitely been a tougher pre-season, but he's exactly the same. The environment is the same; his positivity is the same.'
Freeman's versatility has been an asset throughout pre-season, with him playing in midfield and wing-back positions. He stated that his preferred role remains as a box-to-box midfielder due to his natural fitness and ability to get up and down the pitch.
The new signing also highlighted the familiar faces at Gillingham, which made his transition easier. 'I've known Gaffer and [his former assistant] Dobbo and some of the staff for a long time,' Freeman said. 'Coming into the off-season as a free agent, I thought that could be a possibility.'
With the competitive season starting with a Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town on Saturday, Freeman is eager to contribute his experience and leadership to help Gillingham achieve success this year.
