Gillingham midfielder Zech Obiero faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering injuries to both hamstrings. The 21-year-old loanee from Leyton Orient is expected to be out for a month or two, dealing a blow to manager Gareth Ainsworth's squad options.
Obiero sustained the damage just 15 minutes into his Gills debut during the 4-1 League Two win away at Rochdale on Saturday. The club's third serious injury of the season's opening month, it follows long-term issues for skipper Liam Gordon and winger Kadeem Harris.
Ainsworth's assessment
Manager Gareth Ainsworth confirmed the timescale when speaking to reporters "I think it will be a sustained period on the touchline," Ainsworth said. "Terrible for him to start his Gillingham career that way, but it's football."
Despite the immediate setback, the manager's faith in the player is clear. "I'd sign him again tomorrow," Ainsworth added. "I know exactly what he bring us, but he's a strong boy and he'll come back stronger than ever."
Injury list grows
Gordon, a centre-back, picked up a knee injury on the opening day of the season. Meanwhile, 33-year-old winger Kadeem Harris ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in the 0-0 draw at Fleetwood Town. The absences test the depth of a squad sitting 11th in League Two with nine points from six games.
Their recent form shows resilience, with a sequence of two wins and three draws in the last five outings. The latest was a 2-0 home victory over Tranmere Rovers, secured by goals from Logan Dobbs and Ronan Chapman Hale.
Covering the loss
With Obiero unavailable, Ainsworth will need to rely on other midfield options within the group. The manager's comments suggest he views the injury as an unfortunate interruption to a promising addition, rather than a reason to reconsider the player's long-term value to the project.
The team's next challenge comes as they look to build on their current unbeaten run, which stands at five games. The exact timeline for Obiero's return will depend on his rehabilitation progress over the coming weeks.
